Chinese Lunar New Year is the longest and most important festivity in the Lunar Calendar. Chinese people called the New Year the “Spring Festival” and celebrate with family and friends for fifteen days. The Lunar New Year is a major holiday for the Chinese; this tradition is also embraced and commemorated significantly by many of its geographic neighbors. For example, people in Taiwan, Hong-Kong, Macau, Korea, Tibet, Losar, Mongolia, Vietnam, and Japan (before 1873), all celebrate Lunar New Year with their own traditional cultural performances, rituals, and traditions.

Chinese New Year is also observed in countries with heavy Han Chinese population, such as Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, and Laos, just to name a few. Many ethnic Chinese hold large celebrations in Australia, Canada and America. Since Chinese New Year 2010 is the year of the tiger, you will see New Year’s themed stamps issued by Australia Post, Canada Post, and US Postal Service. Within China, regional customs and traditions of festivity vary widely. It is easy to see how people in these countries will have different styles of Lunar New Year celebration.

The San Mariano Chinese School PTA proudly hosts the annual Chinese New Year Carnival 9:30AM to 1:00PM on Saturday, February 6. Come and spend a few hours there. You are invited to enjoy the theme of the Carnival: a Taste of Traditional Taiwanese Culture. Rain or shine, the Carnival will be there at the Huntington Middle School, 1700 Huntington Drive, San Marino, 91108. The funds generated via this event will be used for the Chinese School at San Marino.
